Over the next year, Lancashire County Council intends to spend £56m improving the region’s roads and a wish-list of upgrades shows how it plans to use the money to keep the county’s transport network running.

The total investment includes £23m to be divided between each borough council in Lancashire, of which Wyre is set to receive £1.8m and Fylde will get £1.25m.

The maintenance work includes resurfacing roads, improving footways and flood prevention measures.

Coun John Fillis (pictured), cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Our roads and footpaths are the lifeblood of our community – we all take them for granted.

“If they weren’t there we wouldn’t be able to get to hospitals, we wouldn’t be able to get to see friends. It would be absolute chaos.

“They are an economic driver and connect us, not just across the region but right throughout the country.

“At a time when we are seeing unprecedented government cuts to our budget, it is more important than ever to ensure we are working to improve the lives of ordinary people in our county.”

The projects form the first phase of the council’s long-term plan for Lancashire and Coun Fillis said he hopes to “squeeze as much money as possible” out of the budget in future years.

Coun Lorraine Beavers, who represents Fleetwood West, said: “This is great news for our area. I especially welcome resurfacing projects on Mowbray Road and Macbeth Road. I know that local residents have been campaigning for years about the state of surfacing in this area. I’m glad that we have been able to help finally get this sorted.”

“I know that the condition of our highways are extremely important to local residents.

“The plans show a clear commitment to improve infrastructure on the Fylde.”
