The scheme for a site on the corner of New South Promenade and Harrow Place already has planning permission for 86 apartments.

The amended proposal is for 66 apartments, and would exclude a building at 6 to 8 Harrow Place.

It is also proposed to reconfigure Harrow Place to create parking bays for the new residents.

This would mean there would be 16 parking spaces on site and 55 on Harrow Place.

The site was formerly occupied by the Abbeydale Care Home.

Town hall planning officers say the scheme is “seeking to regenerate some disused care homes within a bold modern building”.

They say the regeneration benefits outweigh the disadvantages of not providing more than one car parking space per flat.

Councillors are being asked to consider the application when they meet on Tuesday and to defer a final decision to planning officers if they are minded to approve it.

A petition signed by 99 residents was handed in in objection to the original application, but after talks with the developer amendments were made to the scheme.

Squires Gate ward councillor Christian Cox is supporting the application.

In a submission to the planning committee, he says he has been reassured residents’ concerns have been taken into account.

He adds: “The development is of a very high standard and in my opinion sets a great benchmark for what Blackpool should be aspiring to for future developments.”

He adds: “I hope this is a catalyst for further developments on Blackpool Promenade and will transform the South Shore skyline.”
