Poppy planting plan to mark war centenary

A Fylde In Bloom team is throwing its support behind a national scheme to plant poppies across the country to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Freckleton In Bloom is calling on residents to back the Here We Grow appeal by planting seeds this month to allow them to flower in time for Remembrance Day in 
November.

Sixteen soldiers from Freckleton died during the First World War and the town’s In Bloom chairman Susan Lee said: “Pete Walton, from the town council, started the idea, asking if people would sprinkle poppy seeds.

“You can do it anywhere, we just want a really colourful show across the town.”

Poppies represent sleep, peace and death, and were found in many fields across Europe including Flanders, Belgium, the setting of the famous war poem In Flanders Fields, by the Canadian soldier John McCrae.

Susan said the seeds need to be of the Flanders Poppy variety, with packets available for free from Dobbies 
Garden Centre in Blackpool Road, Clifton.

She added seeds should take around 16 weeks to bloom, in time to mark the centenary.
