The council blamed the delay on a hold-up at the Houndshill Shopping Centre, despite insisting two years ago that development would be "completed well before 2020 with no impact on the plans for the tramway extension".

"So much waste of council tax monies on mostly everything in town. Even when they put new cobbles down near the old bus station, they all had to come up against, causing double the work and cost. It seems to be they don't think things through enough, and so we are the scapegoats for funding this ridiculous council,"

- Janet Critchley

(Blackpool Council is paying £4.7m towards the extension, which is costing £22.8m. The Government will put up the rest of the cash. The council said the defects have to be put right by the contractor at no additional cost to taxpayers.)

"Don't know whether to laugh or cry. And will anyone be held to account for this almighty mess-up that has turned Blackpool into an internationally observed laughing stock? No, of course not,"

- Steven McQuade

"In the meantime, while this extension of around 300 years takes forever, Metrolink have built a line about three miles long to the Trafford Centre [in Manchester], including creation of a number of stops,"

- Ian Halliday

"Should never have happened in the first place. The trams are fine as they are without having to disrupt us locals and waste our money. We never asked for it to happen, yet we are the ones who are paying for it and who are suffering because of it. Blackpool is in need of some serious help before the buffoons at the council run us into the ground,"

- Morgan Pritchard

"The headline makes it sound like it's delayed for a further two years, but when you read it, it's referencing the original 2019 date now being late 2021, partially because of the delay with Wilko. They couldn't finish the project when (the Fine Fare) building was still there. That delay wasn't the council's fault. It's possible there might be unknown delays in the future, but doomsday miserable headlines don't do any good,"

- Pamela Barber

"It's an absolute waste of money. It's cost people their livelihoods on Talbot Road and in the town centre over two Christmas period. The trams will struggle to get across at busy periods, just like they used to at Rigby Road. They've also taken half of the tram stops out, so the chances of a tram stopping outside your hotel is a long shot. I just think it was a terrible idea and yet again Blackpool Council ploughed ahead anyway, when basic services aren't in place like road sweeping and the likes. Blackpool is bigger than just the Prom and the council forget that,"

- Ash Hunter

"Let's just be honest, this is the Council of Chaos. How on earth the residents voted them back last year is beyond me given the General Election results. They can blame third parties and the like but the buck stops at the door of the council chamber and their shambolic hold on all things regarding developments and finance,"
