Wyre Council is introducing extended parking stays in towns including Fleetwood, Poulton, Cleveleys and Garstang from Monday while Blackpool Council has invested in a new mobile phone parking app.

For the next three months parking on all Wyre Council’s long stay car parks on the relevant day will be extended so a £1 ticket will provide two hours parking and a £2 ticket will give people up to four hours.

On Rough Lea Road in Cleveleys, which is a short stay car park, a £1 ticket will be increased to two hours and a £2 ticket will allow parking for three hours.

Coun Roger Berry, portfolio holder for neighbourhood services and community safety at Wyre Council, said: “As part of our recovery plan we are working closely with businesses to ensure our high streets reopen safely.

“We know how difficult this last few months has been for businesses and we want to encourage people back to our town centres, whilst adhering to government guidance to stay safe.

“This extra time will give people the chance to spend more time in our shops and cafes and hopefully give local businesses a bit of a boost.”

Coun Mark Smith, Blackpool Council cabinet member for business, enterprise and job creation, said: “We are actively looking at ways in which we can help our town centre and tourism economies start to open up.

“We have already invested in a new PayByPhone parking app which gives users a much improved user experience, and we will be working closely with the BID (business improvement district) company to explore what incentives we can introduce over the coming months to increase footfall.”
