Coun Paula Burdess accepted the honour at Monday’s full council meeting and will work alongside Coun Amy Cross who is continuing as Mayor for the second year after her civic year was cut short by lockdown.

Coun Burdess, who was elected to the council in May 2019 to represent Clifton ward, said she was looking forward to being a strong ambassador for Blackpool.

She said: “I will be certain to champion diversity in the town, sending a positive message of inclusion to all people so they know whoever they are, it is possible to fulfill the wildest dreams of your ancestors here in your home town.”

Newly elected council leader Coun Lynn Williams said Coun Burdess was “invested in her community and very proud of her town.”

She added: “Paula is also a bit of a style icon for the ladies of the Labour group so not only will she be a great ambassador, she will do it in style too.”

Last year’s deputy mayor Coun Jim Hobson was unable to continue in the role after being appointed as a cabinet member.
