Blackpool South MP Scott Benton has held talks with mail chiefs to ensure the resort retains a town centre Post Office when the current branch in WH Smith closes its doors later this month.

The company announced in December it was closing down its Bank Hey Street store which has housed Blackpool's main post office since the Abingdon Street Post Office closed in 2007.

It will close at 5.30pm on Saturday January 16.

Mr Benton said he was pressing for a number of post offices in the town to be reinstated.

He said: "I’ve had a meeting with senior officials at the Post Office in relation to the provision of their services across Blackpool.

"The Post Office branch in WH Smith is due to close in January and this will mean there are no branches in the town centre. This follows the closure of the Marton branch and the post office branch on Waterloo Road over the last few years.

"The Post Office are actively trying to re-open branches in all three locations.

"In particular, re-opening a branch in the town centre is an absolute priority for them.

"Good progress is being made towards securing new provision but it is likely there will be a short period of time between the branch in WH Smith closing and a new branch opening.

"I’m doing everything I can to work with the Post Office to ensure a town centre branch - and those in Waterloo and Marton - are re-opened as soon as possible."

Currently the three closest post offices to the town centre are at 43 Central Drive, 317 Dickson Road and 27 Whitegate Drive.

The Grade II listed former Abingdon Street Post Office has planning permission to be converted into a 102-bedroom hotel.
