Town hall planners have approved an application for a four storey block of 20 flats at the back of Ma Kelly’s Showboat on Queen’s Promenade.

A previous application for 30 flats had been rejected in October 2018, but the council’s planning committee unanimously approved the new scheme, subject to agreements being signed for a contribution by the developer of around £18,000 towards open space and health provision.

Residents had objected to the proposals amid concerns it would lead to further traffic and parking congestion in the neighbourhood.

Speaking on behalf of residents, Lindsay Clarke told the committee there was already huge pressure on parking in the area due to the nearest car park being half a mile away at Gynn Square.

She said at the weekend “the road can be jammed full”, with other businesses in the area also having insufficient parking.

Ms Clarke added cars were “damaged regularly by people trying to get into spaces that are too small.”

But councillors felt the investment would improve the look of the area, and ruled the revised scheme was suitable.

Residential parking would be provided for 26 vehicles, while the Showboat car park layout will be revised.
