A planning application has been lodged with the council seeking permission to use the upper floors of premises on the Promenade behind the Metropole Hotel as five holiday flats.

The development, which is within the town centre conservation area, will involve building a roof lift including a roof terrace if it gets the go ahead, but the applicant says the Victorian building's original features would be maintained.

It is hoped to convert an empty ground floor take-away into a cafe for use by staying guests and the general public in the future.

Documents accompanying the application say: "A future application for the ground floor would see the garish shop front replaced with a front more in keeping with the character of the building ,and one that would enhance the street scene and also the retained features of the Victorian building frontage.

"The existing frontage of 164-166 Promenade above the take away is nicely proportioned with original double window bays with a flat roof canopy with substantial overhang which is in need of repair.

"The proposed works would see the bay windows retained and replaced as well as the necessary works to the flat roof and overhang.

"The second floor storey has two brick gable with hints of Dutch or Flemish in style.

"The brickwork has nice detail and the proposed works will seek to bring this brickwork back to its original condition."

The application will be considered by town hall planners at a future date.
