Blackpool Council is planning to hand over the land to Holmes Investment Properties (HIP) which wants to build a £45m Adrenalin World adventure centre and up to 250 holiday lodges on the east side of the site on East Park Drive.

It is proposed to retain a nine hole golf course on the remaining land on the west side of the site.

A statement from the council says: "As the site consists of open space land, in order to progress proposals for the development and disposal of the site, the council is required to advertise its proposals and to consider any representations received before a decision is taken in respect of those proposals."

Opponents to the scheme say it contravenes the council's planning policies on open space.

A spokesperson for Blackpool Park Golf Club said: “We are devastated by this latest move by the council to take the process further which will ultimately mean the loss of the only 18-hole municipal golf course on the Fylde.

"This development will have a significant impact on local residents, commuters and the abundant wildlife in the area.

"We urge all interested parties to make representations to the council."

A spokesperson for Blackpool Open Green Spaces, said : "The council will be facilitating the loss of one of the few significant public green spaces left in the area.

"This land is enjoyed by many residents, not only golfers, as was demonstrated in a petition with over 8,000 signatures, more than 3,000 of which were local residents."
