Shocked residents today told of their horror at discovering police had cordoned off part of a popular Blackpool park as part of a rape investigation.
There was police tape around the children’s play area at Revoe Park, on Central Drive, yesterday as detectives probed allegations a young woman had been sexually assaulted.
Police had covered two slides on opposite sides of the play area with sheets as part of the ongoing investigation.
A police car was parked nearby, with an officer watching over the area during the day. The woman, in her 20s, called police yesterday to report the rape, which allegedly took place in the early hours of the morning.
Janet Morison, whose home looks out over the alleged crime scene, said: “It is terrifying what has happened – I hope they catch whoever did this.
“I saw the police in the morning but I didn’t think it would be anything like that. I just thought it was drug dealers or something.
“You would think that park is safe – my lad plays there – so to hear this is scary.”
Andy Marston, of Clarendon Street, walks his dog through the park and was shocked to discover part of it sealed off.
The 43-year-old said: “It’s absolutely disgusting but that is the society we live in these days.
“And it’s just going to get worse – a lot worse – before it gets better.
“It’s a real shame for whoever it has happened to.
“You always get dog walkers round here so you would think someone has seen something.”
Christine Mitchell, 56, of Central Drive, said this was the most serious incident she could remember at the park in years.
She said: “Something happened about 12 years ago just after we arrived and they removed some bushes, so everybody could see what was going on.
“Since then, we’ve not had any trouble off the park. All we’ve had was a fire about five years ago.
“You wouldn’t think this would happen here. It’s usually really quiet round here and everybody is friendly.”
A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “An investigation is under way after a woman reported being raped in Revoe Park, Blackpool.
“The incident is alleged to have taken place in the early hours of Wednesday, June 11. The victim is a local woman aged in her 20s. Inquiries are at an early stage and police are in the process of trying to establish exactly what may have happened.”
Anyone with information should call 101.
