Members of the public have been advised not to put themselves at risk by joining the efforts.

A Fylde police spokesman said: "We know that a lot of people are concerned and last night, some posted comments asking whether they should assist with the search. We appreciate people offering, however, your safety is extremely important to us and so we would ask that you leave it to ourselves, the coastguard, RNLI and the National Police Air Service).

A Blackpool RNLI spokesman said: "The all-weather lifeboat from Lytham searched through the night and was re-joined at first light this morning (Sunday 16 August) by the stations D class lifeboat and the Atlantic 85 lifeboat from Blackpool."
