Lucy sustained fatal injuries in the collision and had to be put to sleep by a vet.

PC James Brewster from Blackpool Police, urged the driver to come forward and speak to officers.

He added: “The owner is absolutely distraught, not only has this beloved family pet been with them for 13 years but it was also a companion dog for their autistic son, helping to calm him on a daily basis.

“Their son is now inconsolable about what has happened.”

The driver is described as white, in his late thirties to early forties, with dark hair and was wearing a black quilted jacket. It is thought he had a young girl aged around six-years-old with blonde hair.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting reference 601.
