Shoppers in Blackpool today will come face to face with characters from the Caribbean when a Pirates and Mermaids fun day is held in St John’s Square.

The Blackpool Business Improvement District (BID) has organised the event which takes place between noon and 4pm

Shoppers will be able to have their photographs taken with the mermaid and her pirate helpers.

Eileen Ormand, Blackpool town centre and BID manager, said: “Come along and see the beautiful mermaid and her pirate helpers.

“Dress up in some of her underwater treasures and don’t forget your camera for some really unusual family photos and selfies.

“For those brave enough, don’t miss everyone’s favourite pirate – Captain Jack.

“He looks like he has just returned from the Caribbean and he will be swashbuckling his way around St John’s Square all afternoon giving another brilliant photo opportunity.”

There will also be chance to have a go at water zorbing, which involves climbing into a giant plastic orb.

The event, which is free to attend, is the latest in a series of attractions being held in St John’s Square this summer and organised by the BID.

A chilli festival held last month drew crowds to the square.
