Pet rescue call for crews

Firefighters rescued a guinea pig, a cat, two rabbits and several fish from a house after a fish tank set on fire.

One woman who owned the property managed to evacuate the scene within minutes of the tank catching fire.

The fire happened at 3.15pm yesterday in Greenfinch Court, Staining.

Two pumps from Blackpool were used to extinguish the fire with the blaze tackled within half an hour.

A spokesman for Forest Gate Fire said: “The property suffered significant smoke damage throughout the home.

“After receiving the call, we were on the scene within five minutes and by then the house was full of dark, thick smoke.

“If it was not for the quick thinking of the person involved and the early detection from a fully-functional smoke alarm then this had the potential to be a lot more serious.

“Thankfully no one was hurt and we managed to rescue all the animals within the property.”
