An appeal has today been launched by the RSPCA to find who is responsible for dumping the injured creature outside Mayfield Primary School in St Annes.

Teachers at the school, on St Leonard’s Road, were alerted by children who found the rabbit in the playground on June 10.

The black male rabbit was discovered outside the entrance to the school with horrific injuries.

Its head was tilted to one side “as if its neck was broken”, while injuries to its back legs left it struggling to hop.

Bonita Harding, manager at Mayfield Primary School, said: “We went outside and could see that quite obviously the rabbit wasn’t well.

“His eyes were poorly and looked like he hadn’t been cared for for quite some time.

“We took the opportunity to get the children involved by showing them how to help care for the rabbit to make him more comfortable until the RSPCA arrived.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Nick Green at the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
