The council slammed the behaviour as "thoughtless and reckless," and urged visitors to respect the outdoors and its wildlife.

A spokesman for Wyre Council said: "Our rangers spotted the hedgehog in trouble at Wyre Estuary Country Park last week.

"It was clear that the creature had been stuck for a while, but thankfully we were able to rescue it and hand it over to a hedgehog rescue centre and the hedgehog is now doing well.

"People that litter don’t think of the detrimental impact it can have on our wildlife, but innocent wildlife can be hurt, just because of someone’s inconsideration.

"We would like to remind members of public to use the bins we have provided and if the bins are full, please take your rubbish home with you."
