Tributes paid following the deaths of former Blackpool councillor Brian Doherty and his wife

Mr Doherty, who was 75-years-old, was Labour councillor for the Park ward from 2000 to 2015 and was made an Honorary Alderman in 2016 for his service.

It’s believed both Brian and Dorothy, known as Dot, died after testing positive for coronavirus. Brian died on July 7 at Royal Preston Hospital and Dot died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital on July 5.

Mayor Coun Amy Cross paidtribute at a council meeting last week and a minute’s silence was held.

She said: “This council was deeply saddened to learn of the death on July 7 of alderman and former councillor Brian Doherty and his wife Dorothy who sadly passed away on July 5.

“Brian was first elected in 2000 and in 15 years on the council proudly served the Park ward and was a keen supporter of the karate club.”

She added he served on committees including development control and was a director of Blackpool Coastal Housing.

Coun Ivan Taylor of Claremont ward said Brian was well liked by both residents and other councillors. He said: “He was always a good representative and worked tirelessly for Blackpool Centre For the Unemployed which was one of his greatest passions.”

A spokesman for Blackpool South Labour said: “We are sad to hear of the passing of former Labour Coun Brian Doherty and his wife Dot.

“Brian represented Park Ward, where he lived, for many years until 2015, and was then given the title of Honorary Alderman. Our thoughts are with their family, friends and loved ones.”
