12-year-old Tiko was a regular customer at Notarianni Ices on Waterloo Road, and chowed down on her last sundae with all the trimmings shortly before dying on Saturday.

Her owner Jo Smith, 45, said: “She had really bad arthritis and her organs had failed. We knew it wasn’t good and we made the decision to do what was best for Tiko.

“She absolutely loved ice cream; we used to take her and the kids every year and she’d have her own little tub - the strawberry sauce was her favourite.

“It meant the world to us as a family and we can’t thank Notarianni enough. They were so good with her. There was no charge for the ice cream and they all came out to speak to us - you could see they all had tears in their eyes.

“It really meant a lot to us. We’ll never be able to thank them enough for the lovely memory they gave us.”

Luca Vettese, of Notarianni Ices, said: "She had a large tub with all the works, vanilla ice cream and a flake, and she devoured it. They gave her a proper treat. They brought her in in the van and she was sat there in her basket outside the shop. It was heartbreaking seeing all the family sat around her and the staff were getting quite choked up.

"We're glad that we were able to open early this year and fulfil one last wish for both the family and their dog."
