Proposals for a new discount supermarket in a Wyre town will created 35 jobs, it was today revealed.

Plans for a new 1,200 square metre Aldi store in Poulton were officially lodged with Wyre Council at the end of July.

The discount retailer has submitted plans with Wyre Council to take over the Ball Street premises when Booths completes its move as part of the £20m redevelopment of the Teanlowe Centre in the town.

Speaking earlier this year, Coun Peter Murphy, cabinet member with responsibility for economic development at Wyre Council, said the supermarkets would be a great addition to the town.

He said: “The news that Aldi is coming to Poulton is fantastic for residents of the town and surrounding areas.

“With the brand new Booths due to open and the newly revamped Teanlowe Centre, we’re attracting national brands alongside our independent retailers and providing a fantastic shopping offer.”

The new 35,200 sq ft Booths is set to open in November following extensive building work and reshaping of the centre, with Aldi set to open in 2016.

Planning consultants How Planning added: “The proposed development will have a positive impact on Poulton Town Centre.

“Aldi’s deep-discounter model will complement theoffer provided by the new Booths in the Teanlowe Centre and would provide shoppers with a more complete convenience goods retail offer.”

Store to have ‘very latest designs’

In a design and access statement submitted on behalf of Aldi by The Harris Partnership, a spokesman said: “Aldi stores and its discount operation are established and widely recognised within the


“However, to address the dynamic nature of retailing and changing expectations of customers, the company continually reviews its property portfolio and store

operational requirements.

“Aldi has developed a number of stores in line with this approach, and the proposed design for Poulton includes the very latest design features, resulting in a high

quality and modern facility for the area.”

The site will also have a 90 space car park, including six disabled spaces, five parent and child spaces and 10 cycle spaces as well as new pedestrian access.
