Gym-goers at Crossfit Blackpool, based on Whitehills Business Park, got a sweat on with a fund-raising Team Throwdown event, in aid of Voluntary Service Overseas, (VSO), which works in developing countries to fight poverty and inequality.

They have been doing all they can to support 22-year-old Sarah Trelfa, who is going to Bangladesh with VSO.

The fitness competition included three WODs (workouts of the day), along with a barbecue, cake stand, drinks, and a raffle. Other local businesses also got involved.

Former Lytham St Annes Technology and Performing Arts College student Sarah will volunteer in Bangladesh for three months, on a governance project. She said the money raised by Crossfit Blackpool would support those “less fortunate and provide them with the opportunities we take for granted”.

“I’m thrilled to be going to Bangladesh, working with a world-renowned charity to address issues of poverty, access to education, health and sustainable business. I’m going to offer support, energy and enthusiasm, but I’ll learn so much from the experience.

“Crossfit Blackpool have been an amazing support to me in this, hosting this competitive event and offering a great prize of free gym membership. Local businesses have been so generous offering raffle prizes. I’m really grateful.”

Sarah also recently took part in a five-day Day In Her Food challenge – to put herself in the shoes of 60 per cent of women and girls across the world. She lived in on small amounts of rice, potatoes, small green chillis, onions and red lentils – following a typical basic Bangladeshi menu.

Sarah said: “We are just so lucky. I will never take it for granted I have a variety of food in the fridge and there’s “nothing to eat” again. It has been a real challenge for a worthy cause.”
