Pupils' power to beat bullies

Blackpool youngsters were among hundreds from across the North West given vital advice in the battle against bullies.

Anti-bully ambassadors from a number of Blackpool schools spent a day learning new skills and putting together new plans to take back to their own classrooms as part of the Diana Awards’ training day.

And some told their own stories of how they had managed to handle difficult situations.

The event, at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens gave children a chance to learn about how to cope with bullying and the motives behind the behaviour.

Josef Walker, eight, from Norbreck Primary Academy was brave enough to tell his own tale.

He said: “I was in the playground and one boy kept calling me names and picking on me.

“I went to the teacher and they spoke to him and it hasn’t happened since.

“It’s good to know that when you tell a teacher they can do something and they could help both of us.”

Children learned about different ways to cope with bullying through dance, music.

They also had the chance to meet and hear from celebrities including Radio 1 Presenter -Cel Spellman, X Factor stars Concept & Lola Saunders, actor Max Bowden and Britain’s Got Talent runners up Twist and Pulse.

Amira Belfakih, 10, from Norbreck Primary Academy said: “It’s really good to know why a bully does what they do.

“It is a problem if this is happening to people and this has been a fun way of learning how to tackle it.

“What we’ve learned is something we can take with us for the rest of our lives.”

Connor Chamberlain, 10, is an anti-bullying ambassador from Boundary Primary.

He said: “We’ve been looking at ideas in school to spread the message and we’ve been working on a song.

“We did a music session and we can take the ideas from that back.

“Bullying is bad and it’s something we need to stop.”

Teacher Jennifer Park said: “We have 25 anti-bullying ambassadors at the school.

“What they have learned they can take back and pass on to all the other pupils.”
