The new measures came into effect at midnight on Friday, with Blackpool joining the rest of the county in measures that see restaurants and pubs closing at 10pm and residents no longer allowed to mix with people outside their household bubble, in private homes and also gardens.

Blackpool Council agreed to join the Lancashire-wide lockdown after noting a spike in cases of Covid-19.

This afternoon Lancashire Police said on social media that the force "would like to thank the residents of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde for their ongoing support at this current time.

"We are pleased to report that the new national measures appear to have been followed and last night businesses selling food and drink were all closed and quiet by 10pm.

"We would like to thank each and everyone of you that continue to adhere to the new measures and localised restrictions as this goes a long way in helping to protect not only yourself but each other."

Residents responded to the message in a mostly positive way, with many praising the efforts of the police.

One typical responder stated: "That is. a great thanks to all the people who have brains and understand that this is a great help to the police."

However, some suggested that the seafront was busy and that some people were not adhering to the rules.
