In the pink for Race For Life

This team of Tesco workers will be taking part in a ladies night out with a difference next month.

Around 20 women from Tesco Metro, on Victoria Road West, Cleveleys, will join thousands of others from across the Fylde coast and beyond when they take part in the Race For Life, on Blackpool Promenade, on July 6.

The annual event, which raises money for Cancer Research UK, sees women walk, jog or run a 5k or 10k route, often dressed in pink or fancy dress.

Julie Rawlinson said the fundraiser was close to the hearts of the team at the store, as they lost a colleague, Liz Southerland to cancer about five years ago.

Julie sadly lost her sister, Lilian Warwick, to cancer last year.

The 62-year-old said: “I’ve done the Race For Life ever since it started, and Tesco is a sponsor of Race For Life.

“All of us on the team have known someone who’s been through cancer, or lost someone due to cancer, so it’s a cause which means a lot to us all.

“Cancer is something which affects everybody.

“I lost my sister last year and we lost a colleague about five years ago.

“There’s more of us on the team taking part this year.

“We always enjoy taking part in the Race For Life. It’s fun, there’s always a great atmosphere.

“It’s always a bit emotional, but it’s just nice to get together and do something for a good cause.

“We have a buffet afterwards, with teams from other Tesco stores.

“I did say last year would be my last one, but here I am taking part again.”

This year, for the first time, as well as the main Promenade 5k and 10k runs, Blackpool will be hosting a Race For Life Pretty Muddy event, on Saturday, September 17, from 10am.

Pretty Muddy will take place at Lawson’s Showground and is a muddy obstacle course.
