The Friends of Anchorsholme Park group has secured a grant from supermarket Tesco to install a putting green in Anchorsholme Park, which reopened last year after six years of utility works.

The £725 grant came courtesy of the Tesco Bags of Help community scheme, to promote the environment and community use.

The Anchorsholme Park putting green will see golf return to the park for the first time since it closed in 2014, and work is expected to begin in March.

The grant will be used to buy grass seed, a lawn mower, golf clubs and flags, Anchorsholme councillor Paul Galley said.

Coun Galley, secretary of the Friends of Anchorsholme Park, added: "I'm so grateful to Tesco for their support of this crucial scheme for the development of the park.

"The grant will help bring the community together, as the putting green will be built by the community - providing lots of volunteer opportunities.

It will also be managed by the community, and enjoyed by them at a time when it's crucial for everyone to unite and have fun, especially as we come out of lockdown in the spring/summer."

Chairman of the Friends of Anchorsholme Park, Val Bradford, said: "We have always wanted to bring a putting green back to the park, golf was very much in the park's DNA with it being a golf course before.

"We know from a recent survey we carried out that it will be hugely popular. We are now involving the park craft group to design the flags so they represent our values at Anchorsholme Park.

"I can't wait to have my first game on the new course."
