The 24-year-old, of Lytham, has made it through to the Miss Fylde Coast finals after deciding to enter the contest as a hobby.

Former St Bede’s High School pupil and University of Central Lancashire graduate, Emily, said: “Most of the other finalists are a size eight or 10.

“I am plus size, hoping to inspire bigger girls in the community to have confidence in themselves to go for things they may feel are impossible.

I’ve always been quite confident. It upsets me when people I know suffer self confidence issues.

“You shouldn’t worry about what people think of you. You can do whatever you put your mind to, whatever size you are.”

It’s Emily’s first Miss Fylde Coast contest – but she’s not afraid of a challenge.

Emily, who works at Huddle Media – a digital media company, added: “After university, hobbies went by the wayside. Just when I was thinking about what I could do, I saw Miss Fylde Coast.

“I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge, so I thought why not? It’s been really fun, everyone is so lovely.”

The finals – on November 6 – will involve four catwalk shows: the eco round where the finalists have to model an outfit made by themselves, followed by the evening gown, sportswear and party wear rounds. Finalists also have to raise money for Variety, the children’s charity which supports sick, disadvantaged and disabled children.

Emily added: “We’re judged on how much money we raise for charity.

“I’m going to put on an eco fashion show at Newton Bluecoat Primary School. The target is £200 but I’m hoping to raise more than that.”

The finals will take place at Thornton Little Theatre and the winner will be decided by a judging panel, combined with a public vote.
