The group, who are losing weight through the Cambridge Weight Plan, wanted to find something they could all do together for charity – and decided getting sponsored for slimming down was the way to do it.

Together with Cambridge Weight Plan consultant Sarah Smith – who also took on the challenge – the 19 slimmers have shed a staggering 23 stone between them, in just six weeks.

The money they raise will go to Brian House Children’s Hospice, in Bispham. They have raised more than £650 so far, with more still coming in.

Sarah, from Cleveleys, a former Olympic competitor in taekwondo, said: “Myself and a few of the other slimmers wanted to raise money for charity, but we are all at different stages of weight loss and some people have injuries or medical conditions, so we couldn’t do anything exercise-related.

“We decided to club together and achieve personal weight-loss targets to contribute towards a sponsored group weight loss over the six weeks. It was all done in a controlled and healthy way, and the 20 of us managed to lose 23st between us.

“We are all really pleased with the weight loss success and with the money raised.

“It was a real team effort. Everyone was encouraging and supporting each other through Facebook.

“I had to lose 16lbs myself, that was my contribution, and I managed it.

“It really helped to give us all something to focus on – it gave us extra motivation and it meant a good cause will benefit too.

“We chose Brian House as it’s a local charity, which helps so many families in the area.
