Mission chaplain George Ayoma has set himself the gruelling task of cycling, on an exercise bike at the mission’s base at Trinity Baptist Church, the same distance between Newlyn in Cornwall to John O’Groats - taking in the UK’s ports.

And he is calling on people to help in his quest.

He said: “I have visited every mission port around the country in my time at the mission and I’m hoping to convert this into a cycle ride.

“I have three static bikes in the church and I have been given the go ahead to use them for charity fundraising.

“I want to visit every mission port area around the country using these exercise bikes that currently are not in use due to the lockdown.

“My aim is to raise £139 per day between each port. I am open to be joined by other people, who either want to raise money for the mission, or to simply use one of the other bikes to raise money for their own charity covering the same cycling distance with me or my mission team on the day.”

Regular cyclists, cycling for their daily outdoor exercise, can also join in by donating the miles they have covered. They would need to call George so he can log the miles on their chart.

“I am not just hoping that cyclists who join me raise money for my charity. I would be very happy for any legitimate Fylde based charity to come along, conducting their own risk assessment, but using the occasion to aid their own causes.

He added: “The main point is that everyone is feeling they are contributing to the effort in any way possible.

“I am really excited about it. “More so, because I think that it touches so many people’s attachment to the industry – past and present.” Donations can be sent by text to N2J to 70085 to give £3. Visit www.fishermensmission.org.uk. Contact George on 07919 917640.
