Highfield Park transformed with woolly creations

If you visit Highfield Park you may feel you have had the wool pulled over your eyes... the park has once again been ‘yarn-bombed’ by the Friends and Volunteers of Highfield Park.

The group has knitted together to create bright and cheery woolly wonders for everyone to enjoy.

This year their centre-piece is a fabulous yellow submarine, with a floral psychedelic background mural. The Friends nearly had their submarine sunk before it was even created when one member who was planning to crochet it fell poorly.

However thanks to the power of Facebook, locals in the community came to the rescue and pulled together to crochet/knit the yellow squares to create the fantastic yellow submarine which has been making park visitors smile.

Lancashire Police who came across it on one of their park visits thought it was an arresting sight and even included it on their website as they were so thrilled by the display.

With the extra volunteers, there have also been more displays around the park on the trees with each person putting their own creativity into the event. The only drawback this year has been the two storms in succession which soaked the creations.

The volunteers knit every year from September onwards and once the displays are created, the Friends then turn their hands to working in the community garden which already has some daffodils in bloom.

Local visitors have said how they always look forward to the displays, with one lady saying ‘I love seeing the yarn bombing, as this always signals that spring is on its way’.

The Friends hope that the yarn bombing brightens up the dreary winter days and when it comes down, spring will begin.
