High Sheriff delivers high praise to college

Blackpool and The Fylde College was honoured by a visit from the High Sheriff of Lancashire for the final official engagement of his year in office.

John Barnett MBE was given a tour of the college’s Advanced Technology Centre during his visit to the College’s Bispham Campus and said he was delighted to see such an impressive engineering facility in his home town.

He said: “I’m pleased and honoured to be a Blackpool person and extremely proud to see this fantastic facility in my town.

“Whether you are from Blackpool and the Fylde Coast, or the wider Lancashire area, we are extremely lucky to have such an impressive industry-standard learning environment where people can receive the proper training for successful careers in industry.”

The High Sheriff of Lancashire is appointed personally by The Queen, the role includes a duty to ‘protect and assist in upholding the dignity and well-being of Her Majesty’s Judges and to project the principles of encouraging responsible citizenship and respect for the diversity of the community’. The role dates back to at least the middle of the tenth century.

B&FC Deputy Principal Catherine Hill OBE, who escorted the High Sheriff during his visit, said: “We were delighted John was able to come and take a tour of our Advanced Technology Centre.

“In his role as High Sheriff, John has visited many educational institutions and I was delighted when he told me he had never seen anything quite like our engineering centre.

“It is by investing large amounts of money in advanced technology that B&FC is able to train our students to a level where they are job ready when they leave us, having already worked on the best equipment industry has to offer.”
