Sue McAuley and Susan Holloway started their company, The Saucy Hen, in Wrea Green, prompted by Susan’s interest in hens.

Sue said: “I work as a counsellor and counselling supervisor in private practice, plus I am a semi-professional artist, specialising in portraiture and other art commissions.

“My business partner Susan works full-time for the NHS.

“Following on from my fine art degree and Blackpool College, Susan had asked me to come up with a design, based on hens, for an apron and other kitchen products.”

The business now has a range of kitchen items, such as aprons and oven gloves, which feature attractive hen designs.

Sue said the company had got off to a good start: “The launch party at the beginning of March gave us a good indication as to the saleability and overall response to our products. It was positive and we managed to sell quite a lot.

“It was only the beginning and we have a lot of hard work still to do, and it is a case of fitting it in with our very busy lives.

“I am currently investigating other ways of promoting the products through websites, and also hoping to market them at craft fairs.

“We will also be approaching local retailers in the hope of them stocking our products.”
