A gas leak on the Promenade caused trams to be suspended today.

A leak near the Metropole Hotel stopped trams running for fear of sparks igniting the gas around 10am.

Engineers attended the incident and the tram service has now restarted.

Metropole Hotel duty manager Pat Pearson said: “It was a substation to the north of the hotel.

“The trams were closed but the Promenade has now reopened.

“The traffic is moving and the trams moving. The engineers are working on it but the problem seems to have gone.”
