But it proved to be cold comfort when the food arrived at....1am.

Retired Gillian, 70, of Balderstone Road in Freckleton was looking forward to the delivery, which she figured would be all packed away in time for the 8pm clap for carers.

But she and husband, Allan, 73, were still waiting by the time they did the weekly applause.

They figured there must have been a delay - but didn't realise just how much.

Gillian says: "We waited and waited and when at 10pm we still hadn't heard anything we gave up.

"But 15 minutes later we got a call from them saying they had had a problem in the warehouse and wouldn't be able to deliver until 11.30pm.

"But then the time came and went again until at 12.20am the phone rang and they explained they were in Lytham and would be another 20 minutes."

"We thought seeing as we had already waited up so long we may as well just wait a bit longer.

"Eventually they arrived at 1am."

Luckily the couple, who celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in May, were very understanding of the situation and did not give the delayed delivery drivers a frosty reception.

In fact they say they could not have been n-ice-r.

Allan says "They could not have been more apologetic or more pleasant.

"They are key workers and are obviously working really hard.

"They told us they had had a terrible time as someone in the warehouse had had to go home with a bad knee and everything had been delayed.

"We didn't blame them at all - they were so nice."

The pair, who keep their freezer in the garage, say they saw the funny side as they packed the food away in the early hours, both in their dressing gowns, making sure not to wake the neighbours.

Gillian says: "By the time we had sorted all the food out and packed it away we eventually got to bed at 2.30am.

"I'm normally in bed on a weeknight by around 10pm and so we were shattered the next morning.

"But we had a laugh about it."

Kevin Tully, head of delivered sales at Iceland, said: “We’ve been working hard to ensure we are helping to keep the nation fed and sometimes that means working around the clock.

"1am isn’t a normal delivery slot for our online orders however we’re happy to hear Mr and Mrs Gregson were able to accommodate such a late night visit from our driver.”
