But not to let the precious memories slide, St Wulstan’s and St Edmund’s Catholic Primary school decided to do a behind-the-scenes festive show, in the safety of the class bubble.

‘The Year Covid-19 Tried to Steal Christmas’ is a reflective story told through the eyes of a grandfather as he looked back, with his grandchildren, to when he was a boy in 2020 through the Covid pandemic.

He tells the children how Father Christmas still came and brought him presents, the Nativity story tied in and it ended with the best present he could have in the love of his family and good health.

Deputy headteacher Jessica Storton, who wrote the play, said: “Every year our wonderful KS1 pupils perform a Christmas Nativity but this year, the children have tried hard to learn lines and film their very own short Christmas movie.

"We are passionate about giving children real opportunities to practise performance skills and we haven't let Covid-19 stop us. The performance was written in house so it is unique to our school and our pupils.

"The story focuses on the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ. We also wanted children to learn that the best present they can receive this year is 'the love of our family and our good health', as quoted by the main character, Grandfather.

"Our pupils have been so excited to create a film like movie stars and for them to be on ‘real telly' as they would say!"
