Blackpool’s direct rail link to London is set to be disrupted after it was revealed track upgrades will start one day a week.

For the next six weeks, the direct service between Blackpool North and London Euston will not run on Monday mornings as part of work to upgrade the track near Preston.

The upgrade work does not allow the Virgin Voyager service to get to Blackpool for its 5.25am service – but the return journey from London in the afternoon will be unaffected.

Rail users can still travel to Preston from Blackpool North and use connecting services to reach the capital.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “Track upgrades in the Preston area means direct services between Blackpool and London, on Monday mornings only, are unable to operate until Monday, March 30.

“The work is part of our ongoing investment in the network, which will result in a more reliable service for passengers.

“There are still trains operating between Blackpool and London but passengers will have to change services, which will add on a very small amount of time to the journey. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and advise passengers to check with National Rail Enquiries before travelling.”

Earlier this month, Blackpool Council’s highways and transport chief Coun John Jones contacted Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, asking for urgent action to help get the resort’s trains back on track after a series of changes, including more older stock and fewer services.

The Blackpool to London route is unaffected for the rest of the week.
