Park to host summer of Olympic-style fun

Children in Blackpool can look forward to a fun-filled summer of free sporting events thanks to a grant from Sport England.

The Friends of Eastpines Park group at Anchorsholme ward received a grant of £9,875 to host a summer of free sports coaching and events for children and their families as part a bid to create the ‘Anchorsholme Olympics’.

The money will be used to pay Sport Blackpool staff to run a range of sports events such as rounders, athletics, cricket, football and yoga in Anchorsholme Park throughout the summer and autumn months.

The full programme of sports will start on June 15 and will run until October 19 at Eastpines Park on Luton Road, Anchorsholme.

Children aged seven to 11 will be able to take part in sports activities from 4.30 until 5.15pm.

Children over 11 will be able to take part in activities from 5.15 until 6pm.

Anchorsholme councillor Paul Galley said on social media: “An important part of why we were successful in this bid was because of the sporting legacy we will create from it.

“We plan to continue the programme next year and build a new sports area in the park. For this to happen we have to raise the money for a deposit of £2,000 and pay for the coaching next year, so our plan is to run a refreshment table during this year’s sporting activities.

“Now we are looking for some volunteers to help us man the refreshment table, even if it’s just an hour a week it will be massively helpful for us and every penny we take on that stall will be crucial for next year.”

Anyone interested in volunteering at the free sporting events are asked to email [email protected].
