The Friends of Elswick hosted a football and family fun day to raise funds for a new park off Larbreck Avenue – known as ‘the little park’ by local residents – in Elswick.

Residents and people from other villages turned up to support the event, which raised £500.

The area of land is a large open space, which the parents say has lots of potential to make a great area for children of all ages to play on.

Vicky Jacob, who is leading the group, said: “What a brilliant day!

“The children were amazing in the football games, the little ones were so well behaved and well mannered.

“It was a great turnout from the families of Elswick and surrounding villages.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to all who helped out.

“All the businesses that supported us with raffle prizes, and the great people who donated to the tombola.”

Plans are now in action to get more help and support to raise the rest of the money.

A second fund-raising event is being planned for August.

Vicky added:” We would love this project to bring us all together and show what a great community we are lucky enough to live in.

“We are also going to be applying for grants from various places.

“It is for our children and I for one can’t wait for them to have a safe place to play.”
