A Word In Your Ear - March 17, 2016

Spring is at last in the air and there is a spring, too, in my step. Who doesn't relish this lovely time of year? Aren't we fortunate to enjoy it on the diverse and beautiful Fylde?

When I first arrived here, back in the 1970s, colleagues were amazed to see me return to our Victoria Street offices from lunch with an ice-cream cornet in hand and a damp towel under my arm after sea swimming off the Prom.

Nowadays I still enjoy an ice-cream on the Prom, but am more likely to take a plunge in the outdoor pool at Blackpool’s Village Hotel, by East Park Drive, then enjoy a light repast on the terrace of the 19th hole.

What a choice of amenities we have on our coast!

She Who Knows enjoys an afternoon tea dance, usually at a St Annes hall or the ballroom of the North Euston Hotel at Fleetwood.

Afterwards, there’s a great variety of places to eat and, in this weather, we usually favour a seafront walk between dancing and dining.

A week ago today the Esplanade view over Morecambe Bay was spectacular, with the distant Lakeland peaks still glistening with snow. It was a panorama to match any in the world.

Soon She Who Knows and I might swap some afternoon dances for picnics and tennis at Lytham’s picturesque
grass courts, followed by tea in the Lowther Gardens café, then a stroll down to rose gardens while watching crown green bowlers.

On our own doorstep in Great Marton, trees are budding at magnificent Stanley Park and more youngsters opening their shoulders in the nets of nearby Blackpool Cricket Club – in anticipation of the summer season.

Forget airport security, crowded trains and motorways queues, I’ll be putting up my feet after tennis at one of our sports clubs, enjoying watching cricket and anticipating eating out at the coast’s varied restaurants.

Given some Spring sunshine, what more could you want?
