Police and fire crews went to Bank Hey Street in the resort at about 2.45pm on Wednesday, to a report of glass panels falling to the ground from above a shop, possibly injuring passers-by.

Crew manager Les Watling, from Blackpool fire station, said: “A piece of glass fell out of an over-hanging canopy and struck somebody on the pavement, cutting their head.

“We attended and there were three pieces of glass, about three metres by one meter.”

He said: “The area is now safe because we removed the glass.

“There was one person injured, who was taken to hospital.”

Firefighters used an aerial ladder platform and removed three remaining glass panels, after two had already fallen.

The site is not council property, but the authority has launched an investigation.

A council spokesman said: “We are aware of the incident and there will be an investigation in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive.”
