News row led to woman's attack shame

Sharon Brook punched kicked and bit her partner as the row dragged on over two days.

Brook, 51, of Devonshire Road, Thornton, pleaded guilty to two offences of assault.

She was sentenced to a 12 months community order with up to 20 hours rehabilitation to be supervised by the probation service, told to do 60 hours unpaid work for the community and ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim plus £60 victims’ surcharge by District Judge David Scanlon sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

She was also put on a two year restraining order which bans her from contacting her now ex partner or going within 100 metres of his work. Prosecutor, Malcolm Isherwood, said the couple argued over an incident on the news on January 8.

She became angry, poked him in the eye and slapped him on the head.

She punched him and kicked him. The next day the couple rowed again. Brook smashed a vase and hit him on the head with something sharp in her hand.

When interviewed Brook said her partner did not contribute to the household.

He kept doing nothing and playing on his phone.

Steven Townley, defending, said his client had been trying to end the relationship and get him to leave her home, but he had nowhere to go.

Brook, who worked for the DWP, had told her workplace about her court appearance.

She faced disciplinary proceedings.
