New scheme aims to tackle litter scourge

Town hall bosses are to team up with voluntary organisations, schools, businesses and residents’ groups on a major litter prevention scheme across the borough.

A new alliance has been formed called the Fylde Litter Action Group, or FLAG, to bring together all the volunteer and community groups that already work to keep the Fylde clean.

Volunteer litter collection groups have been set up in Fairhaven, St Annes and other parts of Fylde.

Organisers say various Keep Britain Tidy studies have shown the impact of litter in coastal and countryside areas like Fylde can be detrimental to tourism and business, as well as being dangerous to children, wildlife and the marine environment.

And to build on the success of efforts to keep the area clean so far, FLAG members want as many people as possible to sign up to pledge their commitment to litter prevention on the council website at www.fylde.gov.uk

To celebrate the start of spring, the Surfers Against Sewage group is also holding a community clear up day on Sunday, March 29, starting at 11am at the Starr Gate end of St Annes Beach.

If any groups, schools or businesses across Fylde would like to organise a clear-up day then Fylde Council and FLAG members may also be able to offer assistance.

The council can arrange for litter enforcement patrols in hotspot areas too.
