The popular ice cream parlour this year celebrates its 90th year of trade since its opening in 1928.

Shop manager Luca Vettese said: “In 1928 my great grandparents started selling ice cream, so it’s a big year for us.

“Saturday was our first day and it was a really busy weekend.

“We had a lot of customers saying it was nice to see us open again.”

Notarianni Ice Cream was founded in 1928 by Italian immigrant Luigi Notarianni and his wife Messalina. They opened a second parlour on Waterloo Road in 1937, where the business operates today.

Their great-grandchildren, Luca and his sister, Maddelena, are the fourth generation to take up work at the shop, which serves scoops of vanilla ice cream made with the family’s traditional secret recipe.

Luca said: “My dad still works here so it’s very much a family business. I started working full time when I was 16 and my sister was 18 when she started.

“We all pull our weight together. It’s quite overwhelming the support we have received from our customers.

“We’re looking forward to another busy year.”

Notarianni Ice Cream will open every day from noon until 7pm until the winter season, starting November 4.
