I try to avoid shopping trips with William at all costs.

I’m not the biggest fan of shopping anyway – and when you throw a frustrated toddler strapped into his pram in the mix, it simply doesn’t bode well for a relaxing time.

It’s normally best to time any essential buying with William’s nap – which gives about an hour of ‘supermarket sweep’ style shopping.

So it’s no surprise I was dreading a trip to Ikea, which thankfully only seems necessary about once every four years when we’re on a decorating run.

The hubby and I decided to go after work the other Thursday – rather than face hoards of stressed out Saturday shoppers – and dragged the poor little chap along with us.

But as we parked up outside the huge blue and yellow warehouse, William shouted ‘blue’ and ‘yellow’ and looked sincerely excited to go and explore inside.

If you’ve ever been to Ikea, you’ll understand why it took us 10 minutes to find the ‘start’ of the shopping experience in the vast building, which even has its own one way system to help stop you from getting lost (which you tend to do anyway).

With arrows and red circles on the floor to indicate which way to go, William loved following them and led the way from room to room, which are all laid out and decorated as if in a real house.

And there came the real fun for William – opening cupboards, sitting on sofas, hiding his dummy in his drawers and even climbing in wardrobes.

Then we came across the children’s bedroom section and it was like Christmas had come early with so many toys around. So much so we let William choose one toy – a wooden till – but little did we know he’d already put a football under the pram! (Thankfully, we spotted it before we left.)

Maybe he likes shopping more than I thought!
