'˜We weren't told it may harm our children'

Ms Smith welcomed the news that the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) plans to ban the potentially harmful drug valproate among women of child-bearing age, unless they have a birth control plan in place.

The drug has the potential to cause birth defects and mental and physical disabilities in unborn children, should it be consumed during the early weeks of pregnancy.

Pilling mum-of-two Janet Williams, 53, who is one of Ms Smith’s constituents, led the fight against the drug with fellow activist Emma Murphy.
