ANIMAL testing should be replaced with cruelty-free alternatives, according to a Blackpool MP.
Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden is backing a campaign to clamp down on scientific tests on animals.
He has signed a parliamentary motion calling for the Government to take urgent action regarding new European regulations that fall short of the current UK Animal Welfare standards, and backs a campaign to replace animal testing with cruelty free alternatives.
Mr Marsden said: “As a long-standing campaigner on animal welfare issues, I believe it is absolutely crucial that animal testing can be eliminated wherever possible. It is particularly worrying that this new European directive falls some way short of the stringent animal welfare framework the previous Labour government introduced.”
Mr Marsden signed EU Directive 2010/63 On Animal Testing which calls for the government to take action on the regulation and to hold a debate on the matter at the earliest opportunity.
