MP calls for tougher punishments in wake of animals scandal

A FYLDE MP is calling for tougher punishments for animal abusers after a series of incidents of neglect.

Mark Menzies, MP for Fylde, tabled a number of Parliamentary questions on animal cruelty after five cats were tortured and then dumped near Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary in St Annes.

In another horrific incident, a cat was killed when a bowl of milk was laced with anti-freeze.

The MP has called for firm punishments, including custodial sentences, for animal abusers.

Mr Menzies said: “We urge the justice system to take a tough line with offenders to send a message that it is not acceptable.

“I understand there is scope for custodial sentences for these vile crimes and I hope that courts will see fit to hand down strong punishments.”

Mr Menzies and Mandy Leigh, owner of Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary, said they have been inundated with thanks for their support for animals in need.

Mandy Leigh, who is caring for two of the dumped cats at the Queensway sanctuary, said she has been overwhelmed by the public’s support.

Mrs Leigh said: “We’ve had about £850 donated so far for vets bills to look after the cats.

“They’re making a good recovery, they’re very cheeky, but there’s a long way to go.

“People’s help is much appreciated.”

Mr Menzies added: “Those people who are looking after animals that have been mutilated in this despicable way deserve credit. We need to support these people.”

In his questions, Mr Menzies has asked the Secretary of State for Justice, Chris Grayling, to confirm the number of people found guilty of animal cruelty offences in each of the last three years, as well as the number of people given custodial sentences and those given custodial sentences of over six months. The questions will be answered this week.
