More student nurses begin ward duties at local hospitals

An extra 45 student nurses have started work at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust’s hospitals and community health facilities as part of the organisation’s long term nurse recruitment programme.

The new student nurses – who began their nursing studies last September at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) – are starting work on wards at Clitheroe Community Hospital, Burnley General Hospital, Royal Blackburn Hospital, Pendle Community Hospital and Accrington Victoria Community Hospital. Chief Nurse, Christine Pearson, said: “We welcome all our new student nurses and wish them well in their careers here in East Lancashire.

“It is important that the public know of the Trust’s determination to ensure a safe and effective number of nurses on duty at all times so they have confidence in the services being provided in our hospitals and in the community.” For the next three years, the 39 adult and six children’s nurses will split their time working 50% on ward duties and 50% studying for their nursing degree at UCLAN. In all there are currently 290 student nurses currently studying and working at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The Trust welcomes two intakes of student nurses every year, one in January and the other in September. In the past two years, the number of qualified nurses has increased to the highest on record.
