More sewer woe in St Annes

Workmen from United Utilities have been working to resolve the problem after Cavendish Road was closed to traffic and they hope to have the road open again by tomorrow.

The company today apologised for any inconvenience caused by the latest closure.

It comes less than six months after nearby Clifton Drive South was partly closed to traffic while the company probed sewer damage which initially led to a dip in the road surface.

In the last 18 months, sewer collapses have occurred in a wide variety if locations around town, including St Thomas Road, St Andrew’s Road South, Hove Road and two in the space of just three months in St David’s Road North.

But an underground probe by UU engineers revealed no direct link and the company has said the incidents have been “an unfortunate coincidence”.

On the work being carried out in Cavendish Road, UU spokesman John Martin said: “We’re very sorry to our customers whose daily routines will have been affected by the closure of Cavendish Road.

“We aim to have the road back open on Friday.”

Among the other sewer problems was a collapse in St Albans Road in August.

In July ,officials from United Utilities began work on a sinking road surface in Clifton Drive South, withworkmen still attempting to solve the problem.

Part of St David’s North was closed fora three-week period earlier in the summer.

In September last year,a crater opened up in the pavement of Westgate Road.
