THE countdown has started ahead of the first of Blackpool’s 16 supertrams arriving in the resort.
An exhibition, including a scale model of the purple-liveried vehicles, has been officially unveiled at the Solaris Centre on South Promenade to give people an insight into what to expect.
Blackpool Council leader Coun Peter Callow and Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden launched the display which gives full details of the £100m upgrade programme.
Coun Callow said: “Blackpool is synonymous with trams and this scheme has secured the tramway for another 100 years, providing a modern, green form of transport for both residents and visitors.”
Mr Marsden said: “This exhibition will strengthen enthusiasm for when the real trams arrive.
“And it outlines how important it was the previous Labour government gave this commitment to the trams.
“I think it will open up opportunities for a more integrated transport system.”
The Blackpool trams are a new design and will be the most modern fleet in the world when they come into service at Easter 2012.
