Mercy dash for Blackpool nurse

Rebecca Power, a nurse practitioner at St Paul’s Medical Centre, North Shore, specialises in supporting families in need.

The 37-year-old mother-of-two is setting out to run the London Marathon on April 26 to raise money for charity Cash For Kids, which helps disabled and disadvantaged children across Lancashire.

“I’ve got two children and I’m a nurse dealing with safeguarding. It’s a passion of mine to improve things in this area.

“Working on safeguarding has been an eye-opener for me to the levels of deprivation some children live in.”

The mum, of Cranbourne Grove, Thornton, has been busy training, having completed the Great North Run for NSPCC last year, and has enlisted the help of her brother for moral support.

Alastair Smith, 31, a surveyor, will be running alongside her on the 26.2km route, as an experienced runner.

He said: “I’m running it in support of my sister.

“I’m certainly in support of what she’s doing and it will be a good challenge to do together.”

Mrs Power added: “I didn’t realise how hard the training would be, it’s taken its toll. But it’s a buzz knowing I’m doing it for charity and really getting something out of it.”

The money raised for Cash For Kids will go towards grants for charities that help children with disabilities, behavioural or psychological disorders, those living in poverty or deprivation, suffering abuse or neglect.

The brother and sister duo have also enlisted the help of a seasoned entertainer to encourage extra donations.

Andy Crosbie, who performs an Elton John tribute show, will be playing his show for free at a charity night to support them.

He said: “Charities for children are very close to my heart. My show is a big one and goes out for high fees and I was meant to be working that night but passed on my booking to help raise the cash to support Rebecca.”

The charity night will be held on Saturday at Moorland Tennis Club, Breck Road, Poulton, with entertainment provided by the ‘Rocket Man’.
